Vega Magic has been backed into clear $2.50 favouritism in 2017 Memsie Stakes betting markets with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of Black Heart Bart ($6), Le Romain ($6.50) and Hey Doc ($7).

Will Vega Magic justify favouritism and win the 2017 Memsie Stakes, or will one of his talented rivals post an upset?

Vega Magic ($2.50)

Former Perth galloper Vega Magic is yet to taste anything but success since transferring to the care of the Lindsay Park operation and he appears as though he will tough to beat over 1400m on Saturday. Winner of both the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) and Group 3 AJ Scahill Stakes (1400m) most notably over the Perth Summer Carnival, the Lope De Vega gelding flew home to win the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) in May this year and resumed a fortnight ago for a smart win in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m). Trainer David Hayes is hopeful that Vega Magic’s run in the Memsie Stakes will lead to a berth in The Everest, which suggests that the horse will be at peak fitness ahead of this race.

I Am A Star ($15)

Group 1 winner I Am A Star weather a tough run with a big weight before finishing fourth in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) first-up and she will relish the conditions of the Memsie Stakes second-up. The first three-year-old to win the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) last spring, the I Am Invincible mare ran extremely well upon resuming in autumn and posted consecutive wins in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) and Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600m) most notably. Luke Nolen will take the ride on I Am A Star from barrier 7 and the mare should be right in the finish of the Memsie Stakes at good each-way odds.

Black Heart Bart ($6)

Five-time Group 1 champion and reigning Memsie Stakes winner Black Heart Bart is outstanding over the 1400m course at Caulfield and should be right in the finish of Saturday’s feature race once more. Resuming in late January for a close second in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m), the Blackfriars gelding posted consecutive wins in the Group 1 Ladbrokes CF Orr Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Ladbrokes Futurity Stakes (1400m); both at Caulfield. Black Heart Bart ran on well to finish third in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) first-up a fortnight ago and could receive the run of the race from barrier 5 in the Memsie Stakes, with regular hoop Brad Rawiller in the saddle.
