Fourteen runners have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s 2016 Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield Racecourse; highlighted by the inclusion of several previous winners at the highest level of racing.
Melbourne Cup hero Prince Of Penzance is a noted first-up performer and has been confirmed in the 2016 Memsie Sakes field.
Posting seven wins and nine minors through twenty-five career starts so far, Prince Of Penzance resumed last spring for eighth in the Memsie Stakes; progressing to fifth in the Gold Nugget Handicap (1600m) at Ballarat before again finishing fifth in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m).
Failing to produce much when eighth in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) on October 10th, the Pentire gelding mustered an impressive late kick in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup (2500m) to finish second behind The United States.
Given no chance of success in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) as a $101 chance, Prince Of Penzance mustered a scintillating turn of foot following an ideal run in transit to win the country’s feature race.
Having run second in a hit-and-run appearance in the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville on May 21st, Prince Of Penzance should find a good position off pace in the Memsie Stakes from barrier 11 and will be partnered by Harry Coffey.
Black Heart Bart is a proven performer at the course and should prove extremely tough to beat in the Memsie Stakes from barrier 5 and with regular hoop Brad Rawiller in the saddle.
Debuting for Darren Weir second in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) on March 12th, the Blackfriars gelding returned to winning form in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield.
Running second in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) on April 16th, Black Heart Bart broke through for a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m), and has not been seen at the races since finishing a close second in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on June 11th.
Weir will saddle four runners in the 2016 Memsie Stakes field after also confirming Mahuta (barrier 2) and Palentino (barrier 10).
Lord Of The Sky should be able to dictate terms from the outset in the Memsie Stakes after drawing the ideal barrier 1.
Unlucky not to post a win at the highest level of racing, Lord Of The Sky resumed this time for fourth in the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) before returning to winning form in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) on July 30th.
While failing to handle the late pace when fifth in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago, trainer Robbie Laing believes the horse has only taken benefit from the run.
