Eighteen 2016 Memsie Stakes nominations have been taken; highlighted by the pending appearance of several previous winners at the highest level of racing at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday.
Black Heart Bart has not been seen at the races since finishing a close second in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in June, but has been included in 2016 Memsie Stakes nominations.
A former Perth galloper, Black Heart Bart has undoubtedly found career-best form to date since transferring to the care of Darren Weir this year, and was unlucky not to immediately win at Group 1 level when a close second to The Quarterback in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m).
Returning to winning form in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) before placing second to English in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m), Black Heart Bart beat a talented field to the line in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) in his only other start prior to the Stradbroke Handicap.
Black Heart Bart is a proven first-up performer and should prove extremely hard to beat in the Memsie Stakes.
Weir is set to dominate the field of the Group 1 feature after also including Mahuta, Palentino and Prince Of Penzance in Memsie Stakes nominations.
A number of horses that will be set for the Caulfield Cup are set to resume in the Memsie Stakes, including both Tarzino and Tavago.
Capping an impressive 2015 Spring Carnival with success in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m), Tarzino resumed this year for fourth in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) before finishing an agonizingly-close second in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1400m).
Having returned to winning form in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) on March 19th, the Tavistock entire was unable to justify his resounding favouritism when fourth in the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) on April 2nd; a race won by Tavago.
Winning the Group 3 Wellington Stakes (1600m) in only his third start, in his native New Zealand on November 27th, Tavago progressed to third in the Listed Karaka 3.y.o Mile (1600m) on January 24th.
Failing to produce anything when last in the Group 2 Waikato Guineas (2000m) on February 6th, the son of Tavistock was completely luckless in running when sixth in the Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) on March 6th, in what was his only other start prior to his Australia Derby triumph.
The 2016 Memsie Stakes field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday (August 24th).
