Boban Wins 2015 Memsie Stakes

August 31st, 2015

Talented veteran Boban has returned to racing in the best way possible at Caulfield over the weekend; mustering an impressive turn of in the final straight to take out the featured Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m).

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Glyn Schofield pressed the son of Bernardini forward and settled in prime position on the rails, just off the pace of the Memsie Stakes early leaders who set a reasonable tempo towards the bend.

Rounding onto the final straight blocked for a run, Schofield remained patient aboard Boban and was rewarded for his efforts when a number of leading jockeys elected to pull off the fence; opening a clear line for the six-year-old.

Mustering a huge turn of foot, Boban joined the Team Hawkes-trained Entirely Platinum and Stratum Star at the fore of the field; poking a head clear to register an incredible fifth win at the highest level of Australian racing.

Schofield delivered a gem of a ride on Boban in the 2015 Memsie Stakes and was thrilled to post another impressive win with the Chris Waller-trained gelding.

“He is just a super horse,” Schofield said.

“Chris has done a super job.

“He gave me a super ride today and I ended up a lot further forward than I anticipated, but he found himself there without any effort and in the last 100 metres he lifted.

“He saw where the winning post was and he wanted to get there.

“It was a fantastic effort.

“He is not at his best on shifty ground especially with a little bit of rain on race day, but it just shows what a top horse he is.”

Stable representative for Waller, Justine Hales was delighted with Boban’s Memsie Stakes win and revealed the horse will travel back to Sydney for further Spring Carnival targets.

“He snuck up the rail and he was lucky that they all peeled off and he had some room,” Hales said.

“He never looked like he was really liking the track much and it took him a while to find his feet in the straight, but he has a big heart and a will to win.

“He is very tough, he tries and he gives his all, all the time.

“He is heading back up to Rosehill tomorrow night.

“There isn’t really much in his distance range down here at the moment, so I am sure that he has a plan set for him.

“He will space his runs out and he will go back up there.

“He is a lot bigger horse than he used to be, but he does run very well fresh and he keeps himself fresh.”
