Stratum Star Ready for Memsie Stakes Test

August 28th, 2015

Darren Weir has experienced huge success with his large contingent of runners through recent seasons, and is confident classy four-year-old Stratum Star is up to the class of Saturday’s Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

Stratum Star more than stamped himself as a horse to follow through the recent Autumn Carnival, in which he returned for second in the talent-rich William Hill Plate (1300m) on February 7th before placing third in each of the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m); returning to the paddock after running second in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2050m) on March 20th.

While unable to make much of a competitive impact when seventh in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) first-up on August 15th, Weir told the Herald Sun he is pleased with the condition of the four-year-old and is confident he will lay a great account for himself in the 2015 Memsie Stakes.

“Against that age group I suppose he was around the mark but you know, he has got to keep making the step,” Weir said of the horse’s recent autumn campaign.

“We just had him in at this time of year, hoping that he’d land into a race like this because he’s still a colt.

“This is his toughest test but I’m happy to be taking him there.

“He ran well first-up and has taken great benefit from that run … so Saturday will tell us where we are at.”

Posting three wins and a further eight minors through 16 career starts so far, Stratum Star performed well in black type company upon debuting in the 2014 autumn, but failed to make anything of an impact in either of his target races.

Returning last spring in great condition, Stratum Star won each of the Listed Vintage Stakes (1400m) and Listed Crown Lager Stakes (1400m); ending his year with consecutive second-place finishes in both the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) and Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m).
