Trainer Paul Beshara has been thrilled with the form and class displayed by stable star Happy Trails this time in, and has revealed the popular gelding is in great condition leading into Saturday’s 2015 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.
A three-time Group 1 winner, Happy Trails Happy Trails began his Spring Carnival campaign in typical fashion a fortnight ago; running a credible sixth in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville; a race for which he has returned four times.
Confirmed for his fourth attempt at the Memsie Stakes this weekend, Beshara is confident the Good Journey gelding is forward enough to post a competitive performance at Caulfield, amongst what will likely be a capacity and talent-rich field.
“He’s come on nicely from the Spring Stakes and he’s a happy horse,” Beshara told AAP.
“When they’re happy, I’m happy.”
Beshara has confirmed the 2015 Cox Plate (2040m) will figure as the major target for Happy Trails this time, but revealed he will also consider a maiden tilt at the Melbourne Cup should the horse be looking for more ground.
“We’ll throw in a nom for the Melbourne Cup and see what happens,” Beshara said.
“Two miles will be new for him but three-quarters of the field wouldn’t have raced at it before, and his style of racing will suit.
“They don’t change the winning post, it’s just the barriers are a little bit further around.”
Posting a career total of seven wins and sixteen minors through 51 career starts so far, Happy Trails ran fifth in the Spring Stakes upon resuming in 2014; progressing to eighth in the Memsie Stakes before running an agonizingly-close second to Foreteller in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) on September 20th.
Failing to figure when blocked for a run and fourteenth in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) a fortnight later, Happy Trails continued to impress in placing fifth in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) and sixth in the Cox Plate before ending his campaign with success in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) on November 1st.
The 2015 Memsie Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
