Waller to Saddle Weary and Boban in 2015 Memsie Stakes

August 24th, 2015

Trainer Chris Waller has been pleased with the form and class displayed by Weary through work and his first-up performance this time, and has revealed the talented French import will contest Saturday’s Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

Weary immediately stamped his claims as one to watch upon debuting to Australian racing during the 2014 Autumn Carnival; running second in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) and winning the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) before running third in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) and second in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m).

While unable to reach the same racing highs through the proceeding Spring Carnival, Waller has been thrilled with the quality displayed by the son of Astronomer Royal in recent weeks and is confident his first-up performance for a close second in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) on August 8th has warranted a berth on Saturday’s 2015 Memsie Stakes.

“He is going well and deserves a Group One,” Waller told AAP.

“He has come close before.”

Waller has also confirmed four-time Group 1 champion Boban will return to racing in the 2015 Memsie Stakes, who has not been seen on course competitively since running a close second to Srikandi in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) at Doomben on June 6th.

Having posted a fourth win at the highest level in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) a fortnight prior to the Stradbroke, Waller revealed he has used a similar training regime with the talented son of Bernardini leading into the Memsie Stakes.

“It is a similar training program we used with Boban going to the Brisbane carnival,” Waller said.

“A short break followed by two trials and then first-up over 1400 metres.

“It worked before so hopefully it works again.”

Waller has already experienced notable feature races success this season after saddling popular mare Royal Descent to success in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Randwick over the weekend.

Nominations for the 2015 Memsie Stakes are due by midday today, while a final field and barrier draw is set to be completed and released on Wednesday.
