Magicool broke through for a maiden win at the highest level in his last competitive appearance during the recent Brisbane Winter Carnival, and trainer Mark Kavanagh has revealed the gelding appears ready for a racing return in the 2015 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 29th.
Posting a career total of five wins and a minors through 14 competitive starts, Magicool increasing reached peak condition through his most recent preparation; running eighth in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2020m) and fourth in the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) before winning the Banjo Patterson Series Heat (2000m) leading into his standout success in the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2200m) on June 6th.
Having run a strong third in a talent-rich barrier trial at Flemington last week, Kavanagh is pleased with the condition of the son of Fastnet Rock and is confident the 2015 Memsie Stakes will figure as an ideal launch pad for his Spring Carnival campaign.
“I’m really happy with the way the horse is going, the proof is going to be in the pudding but it is my belief that the horse has improved a lot,” Kavanagh told Racing Victoria.
“He was getting better with each run as a late three-year-old.
“We’ll just wait and see how he goes in his jumpout next week. He went pretty well last Friday but this Friday we’ll open him up and he might kick off in the Memsie.
“It’s a good early race because it gives you options with which avenue you take through the spring.”
Kavanagh is yet to settle on a specific target for Magicool this season but confirmed it will be one of the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) or Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) in October.
“The way his racing pattern changed when there was speed on and he was able to take a sit he was very solid at the 2200,” Kavanagh said.
Magicool stamped himself as one to watch through a consistent and competitive campaign through the 2014 Spring Carnival’ winning the Listed UCI Stakes (1800m) before placing a credible fifth in each of the Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m) and Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m).
Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best odds on all major races through the 2015 Spring Carnival, for which Magicool can be taken at a generous quote of $67 to win the Caulfield Cup.
