Setinum produced undoubtedly his most convincing effort to date in taking out Saturday’s Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield, and trainer Shane Fliedner believes the performance has warranted a berth in the featured Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) for the gelding.
Jumping from the gates well, Setinum was immediately settled off the pace of early leaders Griante and Sea Lord in the Regal Roller Stakes; receiving an ideal run in transit before producing an exceptional final; straight hitting the line close to a length in the clear of consistent mare Platinum Rocker.
Fliedner was understandably thrilled with the result of the Regal Roller Stakes and is confident the 2015 Memsie Stakes is by no means out of reach for the talented son of Holy Roman Emperor.
“I took him to the trials the other day and he had a soft trial and went unnoticed a little bit,” Fliedner said.
“He wasn’t far off fast horses and I really liked him today.
“He was relaxed and he should have a good campaign going forward.
“He wasn’t far off a few Group One horses last time in and these types of horses have to take the step, but he’s on the right path.
“He hasn’t beaten fantastic horses today but once he gets to 1400 metres and a mile, he’ll show his best.”
Dwayne Dunn took the ride on Setinum in the Regal Roller Stakes but concedes the horse will have to step up again if any chance in the 2015 Memsie Stakes.
“He’s a nice horse and he’s going to win a nice race but whether it’s a Group One at this point of time, I’m not sure,” Dunn said after the race.
Posting three wins and two minors through only nine competitive starts so far, Setinum clearly needed the run when failing to beat a single horse him in the Group 3 Zeditave Stakes (1200m) first-up this year, but responded well in placing a credible fourth in the Listed MSS Security Stakes (1100m) before returning to the winner’s circle in the Listed Bendigo Guineas (1400m) on March 21st.
