2015 Memsie Stakes a Likely Target for Temple Of Boom

June 9th, 2015

Veteran sprinter Temple Of Boom mustered a typically competitive performance for fourth in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) at Doomben over the weekend, and will return to the paddock ahead of an early Spring Carnival campaign geared towards races like the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) in late August.

A Group 1 winner having taken out the 2012 edition of The Galaxy (1100m), Temple Of Boom has continued to produce competitive results for Gollan over his 59 start career and pushed his earnings up and over the $1.8 million mark with his most recent fourth.

Citing his vision for the eight-year-old to push over the $2 million mark, Gollan is confident Temple Of Boom is still capable of competing at the highest level and believes races like the 2015 Memsie Stakes figure as ideal targets.

“We’re not going to retire him yet. While he’s still competitive he can keep going,” Gollan told The Courier Mail.

“He looked magnificent on Saturday and he’s a happy horse. He doesn’t look like a rising nine-year-old and he’s remarkably sound.

“He’s only had four runs this time in and he could race again in a fortnight if I wanted to.

“But I will give him a little break now and try to use that residual fitness in some of those early Melbourne races. The weight-for-age races at that time of year should suit because there’s usually still a bit of string out of the ground as well.

“That residual fitness should make races like the Liston and Memsie Stakes suitable.”

Returning in the 2014 spring for second behind champion sprinter Chautauqua in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m), the son of Piccolo finished mid-pack in each of the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) before failing to fire and 12th in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m).

Figuring as the first Group 1 race of the Spring Carnival, the 2015 Memsie Stakes will run at Caulfield on August 29th.
