A particularly talented field of 11 runners have been confirmed to line up for this weekend’s featured Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield Racecourse, highlighted by several previous winners at the highest level of Australian racing.
The standout performer of the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, trainer Chris Waller has confirmed Boban in the final field for the 2014 Memsie Stakes.
Securing five race wins from as many starts over that preparation, including both the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) and Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m), the Bernardini gelding produced some impressive performances over a less-consistent autumn preparation, highlighted by the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m).
Allocated the slightly wide barrier 9, Waller is confident regular jockey Glyn Schofield will again get the best from Boban this weekend.
Also included in the final field for the 2014 Memsie Stakes is classy great Puissance De Lune.
Gaining early favouritism for the 2013 Melbourne Cup off the back of some favourable results earlier in the season, Puissance De Lune was unlucky to finish second in both the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m); the latter to fellow Memsie acceptor Happy Trails, before badly injuring a tendon during the running of the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m), prematurely ending his campaign.
While unable to match the late pace and sixth in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) first-up on August 16th, trainer Darren Weir is confident the Shamardal entire will be far better for the performance, and is offered an excellent chance of maiden Group 1 glory via the ideal barrier 1.
Returning to racing for a credible fifth in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on August 9th, Happy Trails performed to a particularly high standard through the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, finishing seventh in the Memsie and fourth in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) prior to taking out the Turnbull Stakes; ending his campaign second to Shamus Award in the Cox Plate.
Likely to receive the run of the race from barrier 2, Happy Trails has been confirmed to be partnered by jockey Michael Rodd in the 2014 Memsie Stakes.
Carrying winning form amongst classy competition into the 2014 Memsie Stakes, trainer Gai Waterhouse is confident Sweet Idea is a great chance of maiden Group 1 success at Caulfield on Saturday.
Securing an impressive total of six wins and six minor places from just 14 competitive starts so far, Sweet Idea won each of her first three starts through the 2014 Autumn Carnival, including both the Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) and Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m).
Appearing out of sorts when seventh in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) on March 8th, the Snitzel mare was unlucky to finish second by a short nose to Steps In Time in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) on March 22nd, returning to the paddock after failing to handle the less-than-ideal conditions and ninth in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m).
Jumping well in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) first-up on August 9th, Sweet Idea settled in prime position on the heels of the early leaders; finding a clear line upon reaching the final straight to finish in the clear of fellow Memsie Stakes acceptor Messene (barrier 4).
Allocated the awkward barrier 10, Sweet Idea will be partnered by jockey Craig Newitt for the first time this weekend.
Trainer Peter Moody is set to be offered two great chances of success in the 2014 Memsie Stakes via Dissident (barrier 5) and Moment Of Change (barrier 8), and have been confirmed to line up against the likes of fellow Group 1 winners Super Cool (barrier 7) and Silent Achiever (barrier 3).
