The standout performer of the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, trainer Chris Waller has confirmed Group 1 champion Boban is a certain starter in this weekend’s featured Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield Racecourse.
Securing some impressive results while unable to completely return to peak condition, Boban displayed a keen turn of foot to finish a credible fourth amongst classy competition in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) first-up; arguably producing the run of the race.
Including in the final field of last weekend’s Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Randwick before being scratched on account of a rain-soaked running surface, Waller revealed he could not be more pleased with the form of the Bernardini gelding leading into the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival’s first Group 1, and is pleased to have left more than one week between runs.
“I’m pleased I scratched him now,” Waller told TVN.
“I’m sure he’ll be hard to beat in what looks a really strong race.
“We don’t want to waste any runs with horses like this. The have to be 100 percent whenever you take them to the races.
Completing a perfect campaign of five wins from as many starts through the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, Boban broke through for a maiden Group 1 victory when charging home to win the featured Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) in early October, before repeating the dose a month later in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m).
Jumping clear favourite in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) first-up in February, the gelding out of Kenbelle was unable to match the late pace of eventual champion Appearance, finishing a disappointing fifth.
Appearing to have found competitive form when fourth in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) on February 22nd, Boban returned to the winner’s circle when charging home to win the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) most notably on March 8th.
Confirmed to target the open sprint events of the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, Waller is more than likely to nominate Boban for a return to his pet distance of one mile (1600m) in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington of September 13th as the next point of call after the 2014 Memsie Stakes.
