Yet to appear on course competitively in 2014, trainer Mark Kavanagh has confirmed he will accept a position in the final field of this weekend’s featured Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield for talented runner Super Cool.
A strong and consistent performer over each of his racing preparations since first debuting in the autumn of 2012, Super Cool has not been seen at the races since displaying a good turn of foot in the final straight to finish a credible ninth in the 2013 edition of the major Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on November 5th.
Also included in nominations for the Open Handicap event over the same distance at Caulfield this weekend, Kavanagh said the Fastnet Rock gelding was clearly exhausted by the conclusion of the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, and is confident the best is yet to come for the talented five-year-old.
“It was our plan all along to give him the autumn off and get back and concentrate on this spring,” Kavanagh told AAP.
“I would be of the opinion that he’s a much better horse going into this spring than he was last year.”
A standout in major three-year-old events through the 2012 Spring Racing Carnival, Super Cool won a minor over 1300m first-up, and while unlucky to be blocked for a run when fourth in the Listed Vintage Stakes (1410m) on October 6th, responded well when winning the Group 2 Mitchelton Wines Vase (2040m) and finishing second in the featured Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) most notably.
Returning in arguably career-best form in the 2013 autumn, the gelding out of Queen Mother finishing third in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) first-up before securing a strong victory in the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) and breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m).
Unlucky not to secure another race win over six starts through the 2013 spring, Super Cool continued to build in class and recognition in finishing third in last year’s edition of the Memsie Stakes, third in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) and fifth in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) most notably.
A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Memsie Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
