A particularly impressive list of 16 runners have been nominated for an appearance in this weekend’s featured Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield, highlighted by several previous champions at the highest level of Australian racing.
Unlucky to have his 2013 spring cut short when injuring a tendon during the running of the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m), trainer Darren Weir has nominated Puissance De Lune for the 2014 Memsie Stakes.
Securing an impressive total of eight wins and five minor places from just 19 competitive starts so far, Puissance De Lune claimed early favouritism for the 2013 Melbourne Cup off the back of an impressive run of form which delivered victories in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m), Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) and close second placings in both the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) over the months preceding.
Returning to racing for sixth in the 2014 edition of the PB Lawrence two weeks ago, Weir is confident the Shamardal entire will be far better for his first-up performance and is expecting a polished performance at Caulfield on Saturday.
Trainer Chris Waller is set to be offered two good chances of success in the 2014 Memsie Stakes, nominating classy pair Boban and Foreteller for the first Group 1 of the Spring Racing Carnival.
The standout performer of the 2013 Spring Carnival, Boban secured a perfect record of five wins from as many starts, including both the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) and Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) most notably.
While failing to reach the same peak condition through autumn, the Bernardini gelding added the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) to his list of achievements, and is a great chance of securing a fourth Group1 title in the 2014 Memsie Stakes, with regular jockey Glyn Schofield confirmed to retain the ride.
Also performing to a high standard through the 2013 spring, Foreteller displayed a keen turn of foot to run on for fourth in the PB Lawrence Stakes two weeks ago and appears primed for another impressive display at weight-for-age this weekend.
Unable to figure when eighth in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) first-up during his 2013 spring preparation, the Dansili gelding charged home to pip Puissance De Lune on the line in the Makybe Diva Stakes; finishing second to Atlantic Jewel in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) most notably just one month later.
Trainer Peter Moody is also set to launch a two-pronged attack on the 2014 Memsie Stakes via classy pair Dissident and Moment Of Change.
Contesting three wins and five minor places from just 13 competitive race starts to date, Dissident has returned to racing in exceptional form this year, finishing second in the Listed Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) first-up before claiming back-to-back victories in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m).
While failing to fire and 12th in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) last time out on April 12th, Moody is confident recent form displayed in barrier trials will translate into a successful first-up appearance in the Memsie Stakes for Dissident.
Contesting a long and busy nine race preparation over the 2013 spring and 2014 autumn, Moment Of Change was unlucky not to secure an open sprint title early when finishing just off the pace of Buffering in both the Group 1 VRC Sprint (1200m) and Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m), however held out to secure back-to-back victories in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) in February.
Other notable nominations for the 2014 Memsie Stakes include the likes of four-time Group 1 winner Silent Achiever, Cox Plate champion Fawkner and in-form sprinter Sweet Idea, with a final field of 16 and barrier draw for the Caulfield feature due to be released on Wednesday morning.
