Confirmed to partner the world’s leading sprinter Lankan Rupee upon his racing resumption this spring, jockey Craig Newitt is confident of claiming the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival’s first Group 1 this season, confirmed to partner in-form sprinter Sweet Idea in this weekend’s featured Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.
Performing to a high standard over the 2014 Autumn Carnival, Sweet Idea returned to racing with an impressive victory in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on August 9th, more than stamping her claims as one to watch in open sprinting events this season.
Yet to partner the Snitzel filly competitively, Newitt told AAP he will partner the four-year-old in a track gallop on Tuesday morning, but is confident of a successful partnership in the 2014 Memsie Stakes.
“I’ll go in tomorrow morning and gallop her,” Newitt said.
“She’s bright in herself. She’s feeling well and I’m sure she’ll work well in the morning and go to the races on Saturday and be very hard to beat.
“There will be a lot of horses in the race that will get back but she will put herself on the speed and she’s fit and tough.
“She’ll give a big sight for a long way.”
Securing an impressive total of six wins and six minor places from just 14 competitive race starts so far, Sweet Idea stamped her claims as a serious racehorse from her maiden preparation; finishing second in the Group 3 McLachlan Stakes (1200m) and winning the Group 2 Silver Slipper (1100m) before placing a credible third in the major Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) through the autumn of 2013.
Finishing second to Thump in her only appearance on course through the 2013 Spring Carnival, the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m), the mare out of Flidais completed three impressive race wins back-to-back at the beginning of 2014, including both the Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) and Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) most notably on February 22nd.
While appearing to be lacking top gear when finishing a disappointing seventh in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) on March 8th, Sweet Idea returned to exceptional form when finishing a close second to Steps In Time in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) on March 22nd; returning to the paddock when ninth in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m).
