Memsie Stakes Upgraded To Group 1 Status From 2013

The Memsie Stakes has been upgraded to a Group 1 for the 2013-2014 racing season after spending the past few years as one of the highest rates Group 2 events.

The race was first established in 1899 and has since been one of the most exciting race days of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Run over a distance of 1,400 metres, the Memsie Stakes is run under weight-for-age conditions.

The Memsie Stakes is open to horses aged three-years-old and upwards and was worth a total of $220,000 in prize money in 2012.

From next year, the Memsie Stakes will have to up its prize money to a minimum of $350,000 in order to meet the Group 1 status requirements.
