The Memsie Stakes

The 2016 Memsie Stakes is an esteemed Group 1 Australian horse race and is one of the first great betting opportunities for punters in the spring racing season. The Group 1 Memsie Stakes is held at one of Australia’s premier horse racing tracks, Caulfield Racecourse, in late August leading up to the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

The 2016 Group 1 Memsie Stakes will run on Saturday 27 August at Caulfield Racecourse.

The Memsie Stakes was upgraded to Group 1 status from Group 2 for the 2013/2014 racing season and now marks the first Group 1 race of the season.

The Memsie Stakes takes place over a distance of 1400 metres and is run under weight-for-age conditions. It is the headline event on a day that also includes the Group 3 HDF McNeil Stakes (1200m) and the Group 3 The Heath 1100 Stakes (1100m).

Open to horses three years old and above, the Memsie Stakes is rarely contested by three-year-olds as it falls too early in the season.

With stakes set at $400,000 the Memsie Stakes is often a good predictor of later races.

Memsie Stakes Betting

Punters can often get an early glimpse of the leading spring contenders in the Memsie Stakes, as horses on their way to prestigious events including the time-honoured Melbourne Cup and the leading weight-for-age race in Australia the Cox Plate often have their first-up run in the Memsie Stakes.

A solid Memsie Stakes betting tip is to select one of the top brands seen on Freebets.com.au, and then take into account the weight-for-age conditions for the race itself. Younger horses will of course carry a weight advantage, however this can easily be offset by experience and physical development of older horses. You can go and find more information on the Memsie Stakes as well as other Spring Racing events at Ladbrokes.

When placing your bets, take a holistic view of everything that each horse is capable of, and as always, focus very much on the jockeys when making your betting selections.
