The Memsie Stakes
The Memsie Stakes is an esteemed Group 2 Australian horse race and is one of the first great betting opportunities for punters in the spring racing season.
The Group 2 Memsie Stakes is held at one of Australia’s premier horse racing tracks, Caulfield Racecourse, in late August leading up to the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
The Memsie Stakes takes place over a distance of 1400 metres and is run under weight-for-age conditions. It is held on the same day as the Group 3 HDF McNeil Stakes (1200m).
Open to horses of all ages, the Memsie Stakes is rarely contested by three-year-olds as it falls too early in the season.
With stakes set at $200,000 the Memsie Stakes is often a good predictor of latter races.
Punters can often get an early glimpse of the leading spring contenders in the Memsie Stakes, as horses on way to prestigious events including the time-honoured Melbourne Cup and the leading weight-for-age race in Australia the Cox Plate often have their first-up run in the Memsie Stakes.
Past Winners
First run in 1899, the Memsie Stakes has been won by many of Australia’s best track stars including three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva (2005), Sunline (2001 & 2000), and further back in history the mighty Phar Lap (1931)
